Toaheedliinii farm raw milk herd shares
Fresh milk from YOUR goat! Toaheedliinii Farm is now offering raw milk goat shares for purchase so that you too can have fresh, nutritious raw milk! Here at Toaheedliinii Farm, my goal and drive is to produce the cleanest, most nutritious milk possible and for the last four years I have been doing just that as I have served families in Clatsop County and surrounding areas. I have Nigerian Dairy goats, which are prized for their wonderfully creamy and sweet tasting milk. Wonderful for drinking, cheese making, butter, ice cream, kefir, and yogurt!
Why Raw Goats Milk? The protein in goat's milk are different from cow's milk protein, making them easier for humans to digest. Goats milk is also naturally homogenized. The cream stays suspended in the milk. Raw milk contains many natural enzymes that are destroyed in the pasteurization process that commercial milk undergoes. There are many reasons for wanting to drink raw goat's milk. The best may be that it tastes good!!
All dairy animals are milked in a separate area from their usual quarters, and extreme precautions are taken to see to it that the milk is strained and chilled in record time and that all equipment is sterilized and kept immaculately clean.
Is the milk Organic? Yes and no! Toaheedliinii Farm is not Certified Organic, therefore I cannot make that claim. However, all the feed that is given to the animals is organically grown, I do NOT use pesticides or herbicides here on the farm, and I use organic herbal remedies on all the livestock whenever there is a need, instead of using harmful drugs.
"What is a herd share, and why can't I just buy it?" In the State of Oregon, it is illegal to deliver raw milk, to advertise that you have raw milk for sale, and to have more than 2 cows, 9 goats, and/or 9 sheep that are lactating for raw milk consumption purposes. These laws hurt small farms, but there is another option that allows us a bit more freedom! A "herd share" is when you literally buy a "share" of a goat. You become a joint owner of the animal and in exchange for paying a monthly boarding and care fee, you receive 1/2 gallon of real, fresh milk from your animal every week. Herd shares are legal in Oregon, and are becoming increasingly popular.
"How do I buy a herd share, and where do I get the milk" To buy a herd share, first please email me to check for availability! I currently have no goat shares available (goat share availability will increase in the spring as more goats "freshen", i.e. give birth). Once you have emailed, you must print out the 'Dairy Herd Share Agreement' form, sign it, and mail it to Toaheedliinii Farm. To find and print the Agreement form, please e-mail [email protected]
At this time, you can either pick your milk up directly from the farm (located in Astoria, Oregon), or you can pick it up at the Monday or Thursday drop-point in Astoria (exact location to be given upon request).
"How much does a Herd share cost?" You make a one time payment of $ 25.00 to "buy" a share in our herd. You will then pay a $28.00 monthly boarding fee that covers your share's part of the cost of feed, veterinary care, supplements and supplies. The herd share purchase fee and the first-month boarding fee ARE due at the same time, so your start up fee will be $53.00 (Fifty-three dollars). NOTE: the monthly boarding fee is due during the FIRST WEEK of each month. If you own one share and have paid your monthly boarding fee, you are entitled to 1/2 gallon of milk per week, or roughly two gallons per month. If you need more milk, you can purchase additional shares, and will have the additional monthly boarding fee. If you no longer want to own a share of the Toaheedliinii Farms dairy herd, we will buy your share back immediately. You can not sell your share of the herd to a family member or friend. The sales contract and boarding agreement cannot be transferred.
"Do I need to bring my own jars?" No, Toaheedliinii Farm will supply half gallon jars for your milk. However, you DO need to bring the clean and empty jars back each week when you pick up your next batch of jars. While Toaheedliinii Farm provides jars for you, you do need to bring a cooler with ice in it to transport your raw milk. Raw milk MUST stay cold at all times!
How should I handle my milk after I pick it up? The milk you pick up will be raw, un-pasteurized milk. We store the milk at 38 degrees or colder. You should get it from our place to your refrigerator as quickly as possible. If you live a distance from us, or have to make stops on your way home, you may want to bring an ice-filled cooler with you, so you can keep the milk at refrigerator temperature until you get it home. If you handle the milk as explained and refrigerator it promptly, the milk will easily keep a week to 10 days with no change at all in the quality or taste. Goats milk is naturally homogenized, meaning the fat is suspended in the milk. However, our milk is high in butterfat and some of the cream will rise to the top of the milk. You can skim this off if you want to use the cream. For drinking or cooking with whole milk, you can shake the jar well before pouring, so that the cream is again dispersed into the milk.
Is milk available year round? On the average, milk is available 9 months of the year. But I try to stagger my breedings in such a way that I also have milk. Since you own a share of the herd, and the herd continues to eat and must be taken care of 24/365, boarding fees will still be due. However, you may elect to sell back your share to us at the end of milking season, and then re-purchase a share again before next season. This is perfectly acceptable. However, due to the limited availability of shares, you run the risk of not being able to re-purchase shares once you decide to rejoin the team of shareholders.
